The BCB will put into circulation today, July 23rd,2012, through commercial banks and ATMs, the new banknotes of 20 and 10 reais belonging to the Second Family of the Real.
The new banknotes present several security features of easy identification, similar to the ones shown in the banknotes of 50 and 100 reais, such as the watermark stamp and the hidden number. The novelty is the number at the right upper part of the banknote that has its color changed. By moving the banknote, the color of the number corresponding to the value of the banknote changes from blue to green, while a brilliant bar seems to roll over it. This new feature brings even more security and makes it easier for the citizen to check the authenticity of the banknotes.
Since 2010, the substitution of the banknotes of the First Family has occurred gradually, as they are withdrawn due to its natural depreciation. Therefore, there is no need to change the current banknotes for the new ones in banks, as the two Families of banknotes will be in circulation until the complete substitution of the current ones.
The launch of the new banknotes of 5 and 2 reais is expected to happen in 2013, completing the project of the Second Family of the Real.
The second family of Real banknotes
The change of the design of Brazilian banknotes aims at its modernization, with the adoption of more sophisticated graphical tools, in addition to promoting the accessibility to visually impaired persons, offering resources to help the identification of the banknotes by this share of the population.
The theme of the First Family – Republic effigy at the front and animals of the Brazilian fauna at the back – was maintained; however, the graphical features were reformulated, in order to aggregate security and facilitate the checking of the authenticity by the population.
The banknotes of 20 and 10 reais will also maintain the current predominant colors, aspect that facilitates the fast identification of the values in the daily transactions. The new banknotes follow the logic of different sizes defined to the Second Family of the Real. This resource, in addition to the tactile pronounced prints, facilitates the recognition of the banknotes by the visually impaired persons.
Secure notes: a matter of social responsibility
Since the launch of the Real, in 1994, the Brazilian banknotes have played their role with no serious incident in terms of volume of falsifications. However, the popularization of the digital technologies worries the BCB, which acts in a preventive way, as to continue guaranteeing the security of our money in the upcoming years. Currently, this is a reality not only in Brazil, but all over the world: the issuer authorities have chased to update the design of their banknotes with higher frequency, in order to aggregate more technologically sophisticated security features capable of resisting the forgers’ attempts.
The volume of falsifications in Brazil does not represent today a threat to the economy. However, for the common citizen, receiving a false banknote may represent a significant loss in his or her monthly budget. Therefore, it is a matter of social responsibility to improve the mechanisms that allow the population to have conditions to check with security the authenticity of their money.
How to check the authenticity of the new banknotes of 20 and 10 reais
The new banknotes of 20 and 10 reais present several security features of easy identification. The biggest novelty is the number that has its color changed, at the right upper part of the banknote: by moving the banknote, the color of the number changes from blue to green, while a brilliant bar seems to roll over it.
The other security features are similar to the those shown in the banknotes of 50 and 100 reais of the Second Family, in circulation since 2010. For example, the hidden number – number corresponding to the value of the banknote – is invisible when it is put at the horizontal position, at the height of the eyes, in a place with lots of light. On its turn, the watermark stamp reveals the value of the banknote and the image of the animal: the golden lion tamarin, in the 20-real-banknote, and the greenwing macaw, in the 10-real-banknote.
